françois morellet Centenary 1926 – 2026
On the occasion of the centenary of François Morellet’s birth, numerous institutions are coming together to pay tribute to one of the major figures of contemporary art, on the initiative of the Estate Morellet and of the Centre Pompidou
Featured in France’s greatest public collections as well as numerous foreign museums, Morellet has also made a lasting impact on public spaces with more than a hundred works visible in our cities—on building facades, in gardens, train stations, and public squares. Thanks to his freedom and humor with mixed with the vocabulary of geometric abstraction, he was able to create a lively dialogue between art, architecture, and the public. Echoing the retrospective “François Morellet. 100 pour cent,” presented at the Centre Pompidou-Metz, a vast national program has been initiated by the Estate Morellet, the Centre Pompidou, the Mennour gallery which represents the artist and in collaboration with numerous partner institutions.
This large-scale project is being rolled out across France through new exhibitions, rediscoveries of works in collections and public spaces, as well as a series of meetings, conferences, and an international symposium. The aim is to reexamine Morellet’s legacy, his place in art history, his relationship to heritage and architecture, and the influence he continues to exert on contemporary artists.
